A Parent’s Letter: “I Never Thought a Government School Could Do This”

Some of the most honest assessments of our work do not come from donors or officials. They come from parents, the people with the most at stake and the least reason to flatter us.

This is one of them, written in the spirit of many we have heard from parents in Kurnool district. It is a representative account, in the voice of a mother in Dhone whose daughter studies at the local Zilla Parishad school.

For years I sent my daughter to the government school because it was what we could afford, not what I believed in. I had stopped expecting much. The building was breaking. The teachers changed every year. I told myself an education there was better than no education, and I left it at that.

Then things began to change. The classroom was repaired. A computer was set up. They began teaching the children spoken English, and then something called an AI workshop. My daughter came home one evening and showed me how to use my own phone in a way I never knew. Last week she told me she wants to become an engineer. She had never said a thing like that before.

I never thought a government school could do this. I want other parents in our village to know it is possible.
